The Problem: The Struggle is Real

Summer makeup can feel like an uphill battle. The heat makes your foundation or concealer slide, your eyeshadow crease, and your mascara smudge. It’s frustrating! But the good news is, you’re not alone, and there’s a solution.

Now What?

Enter your makeup mentor (that’s me!). I can help you conquer the summer makeup struggle.

I’ve had my fair share of summer, makeup mishaps, and I’ve tested dozens of techniques and products to find the ones that will withstand the heat. I also appreciate that simplicity is paramount! No makeup artist certification required for these tips and techniques!

Think of me as your friendly guide, ready to share tried-and-true tips to keep you looking fresh and fabulous all season long.

Your Step-by-Step Guide

Let’s break it down into easy steps, ensuring your makeup can handle the summer heat!

  1. Start with Skincare: Hydrated skin is happy skin. Use a lightweight moisturizer that won’t clog pores or feel thick and heavy.  You can choose one with SPF or apply your sunscreen separately – the choice is yours … but always choose sunscreen! Sunscreen protects your skin from UV rays and it along with your moisturizer creates a smooth base for your makeup. My favourite skincare can be found here.
  2. Prime Time: A good primer is your best friend in summer. It helps your makeup stay in place and controls shine. A colour correcting primer is a great way to cut back on foundation and concealer. The colour correction done by the primer will go a long way in addressing complexion redness, dark spots or circles you want to cover, thereby allowing you to reach for a lighter concealer & foundation or simply applying less. Another option is to choose a mattifying primer if you have oily skin or want to diminish shine. Check out this video to see how to apply a colour correcting primer.
  3. Lighten Up: Heavy foundation and summer don’t mix. Switch to a BB cream or tinted moisturizer for a lighter, breathable coverage. These products often come with added SPF, giving you extra protection. Or opt for spot coverage with a great concealer in just the few areas you want a little coverage. This video shows how! (Or go with a colour correcting primer from tip 2 – you’ll be able to get away with less foundation and concealer).
  4. Creamy and Dreamy: Cream products blend seamlessly into the skin and look more natural in daylight. Try cream blushes and bronzers for that sun-kissed glow. These 2 videos show you how to apply cream bronzers and blush for a natural look (bonus tips for mature skin).
  5. Waterproof Everything: From mascara to eyeliner, choose waterproof formulas to avoid smudging and running. These products are designed to withstand sweat and humidity. Tubing mascara is another great option! Tubing mascaras don’t run or smudge – even in the hot summer sun! This video explains why I love a great tubing mascara!

BONUS TIP – try tightlining with a waterproof pencil eyeliner. The effect is gorgeous and doesn’t even look like you’re wearing makeup!

  1. Set It and Forget It: A setting spray or powder can lock your makeup in place. Choose a translucent powder to avoid extra coverage, and to give your makeup longevity. You can even carry it with you and touch up your setting powder from time to time when its needed. Here is a quick video on HOW to use a setting powder.
  2. Blotting Papers: Keep blotting papers in your bag to manage shine without adding more product. They’re a quick and easy way to touch up excess oil on the go.
