Part 1

Have you ever gazed at your reflection in the mirror, leaning in close to inspect all the nuances that make it uniquely yours?

If you’re like many of us, you might be wondering where those lines, enlarged pores, and discolorations suddenly came from. Did they really appear overnight? Is this what having “mature” skin means now?

Signs of aging don’t appear overnight, but sometimes it feels like they show up out of the blue. Often, we’re not thrilled about it—actually, most of the time we’re ready to battle and reverse the hands of time!

While embracing the beauty of aging gracefully is important, we also want to do it on our own terms. The good news is that understanding the special needs of mature skin and why it’s different makes it much easier to care for and love the skin you’re in—regardless of your age!

Lets dive in!

Understanding Mature Skin

Mature skin is generally defined as skin that is showing signs of aging. It is difficult to assign an age to “mature” skin because it differs for everyone. Lifestyle, genetics and environment all play a role in how our skin ages.

That said, for most of us, our skin is the first body part to show signs of aging. These changes are inevitable and include:

  1. Loss of Elasticity: Collagen and elastin production decrease, leading to sagging and less firm skin.
  2. Dryness: Oil production slows down, resulting in drier skin that needs extra hydration.
  3. Thinner Skin: Over time, skin becomes thinner and more fragile.
  4. Fine Lines and Wrinkles: These natural signs of aging become more pronounced.
  5. Uneven Skin Tone: Sun exposure and aging can lead to age spots and uneven pigmentation.

Unique Needs of Mature Skin

Now that you know what “mature” skin is, let’s get into why its needs are unique. This post focuses primarily on skincare, but check back next week for details on makeup. We’re going to cover both realms of beauty!

Youthful skin has the luxury of wearing almost any product flawlessly. Most youthful skin (with exception of those with special skin conditions, acne, etc) is supple, firm and even. Collagen levels are high along with natural oil production and hydration.

Mature skin, on the other hand, is host to the signs of aging listed above. Consequently, when selecting products to build out a skincare routine for mature skin, we want to keep these special needs in mind.

The following guide will help you select products that work well for mature skin.

Skincare Products Meant for Mature Skin

Mature skin needs products tailored to its unique requirements. Mature skin benefits from products that:

  1. Boost Collagen Production: Ingredients like retinoids and peptides help stimulate collagen and elastin, firming the skin. Collagen supplements have also been shown to be effective. This collagen supplement also includes hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and aloe vera.

  1. Intense Hydration: Peptides, glycerin, and ceramides provide deep moisture, keeping skin plump and supple. Hyaluronic acid is also effective in plumping skin.
  1. Gentle Care: Products with anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide and chamomile soothe and protect delicate skin.
  1. Brightening Agents: Vitamin C and other antioxidants help protect skin from the damage caused by free radicals.  Some people may also notice an increase in brightness or vibrancy to their complexion.
  1. Sun Protection: Broad-spectrum SPF is crucial to protect against further damage from UV rays.

Action Plan: A Tailored Skincare Routine

The above guide offers a general starting point for developing a plan to care for your skin and address signs of aging. Creating a skincare routine that addresses the specific needs of mature skin involves:

  1. Cleansing: Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser to avoid stripping natural oils. Adopting a double cleansing routine is a great idea to gently remove sunscreen, makeup and dirt before deep cleansing with a water based cleanser. These are 2 of my favourite oil based cleansers to use as a first step in a double cleanse.

This video shows how you can easily add in an oil based cleanser to your routine for an effective double cleans.

  1. Exfoliating: Opt for mild exfoliants to remove dead skin cells without causing irritation. This cleanser is a staple in my house, it can be used 2-3 times per week for safe and effective exfoliation. Additionally, mild at-home chemical peels can be used weekly. This mask is one of my top picks.
  1. Moisturizing: Apply a rich, nourishing moisturizer to lock in hydration. In the summer its nice to lighten up and use one that is light weight and still hydrating. I love this one. In the winter, you can easily add in extra hydration with an occlusive like this.
  1. Treating: Use targeted serums with active ingredients like retinoids, peptides, and antioxidants. I’m loving this K-Beauty serum/booster combo. It leaves my skin feeling hydrated, soft and supple.
  1. Protecting: Never skip sunscreen, even on cloudy days, to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. I love using a tinted sunscreen in the summer – its a sheer coverage so I don’t even need foundation unless its a special occasion or event!

This Action Plan is a great starting point, but further customization and specialization to your specific needs, priorities and lifestyle will take it from a good skincare routine to a great one! Please connect with me for a personalized plan.
